Magdalenian Bec (Ofnet cave; Nördlinger Riess)

Figure 1
This is a Bec ("Zinken") from the Bavarian Magdalenian, which is characterized by backed lamelles, different subclasses of burins and endscrapers. Lacam burins, Langbohrer and Zinken / Becs and harpoons are rare but always part of the larger ensembles.

It is generally suggested that this Magdalenian is rather late (Bölling interstadial). In Bavaria, Magdalenian sites, excavated with up-to date methods are scare. There is an important series of caves and abris with late paleolithic material in the lower Altmühl valley (for example the Klausenhöhlen), but they sufferer from early and inadequate excavation and the material is still unpublished.

To the west, at the border with Swabia, there is a cluster of sites in the Nördlingen Basin (Hohlenstein Ederheim; Kleine Ofnet, but also some unexcavated Abris and caves and open air sites). The lithic material of one of these sites, Kaufertsberg, has been reinvestigated and published during the 1980ies (Kaulich, 1983)- see also: 1654 .

The only modern excavation has been at the open-air site of Barbing, where, unfortunately, no fauna was preserved (Reisch, 1974). The Nörlinger Riess was the region in Bavaria were prehistoric research started very early in the 1870, initiated by O. Fraas who was later followed by R. R. Schmidt and F. Birkner.

The Bec displayed here comes as an isolated find from the fields in front of the Ofnet caves and fits well in the artifactual spectrum of the late Magdalenian in S/W-Germany as exemplified by the rich findings at the Petersfels cave.
