Burinated Artifact at Moravany-Modrovka

Figure 1
Burination and shouldering are hallmarks of the Willendorf-Kostenki technocomplex in Middle Europe. This is a shouldered and burinated artifact is made on local radiolarite from Moravany-Modrovka, a surface cluster in the Vah Valley (eastern Slovakia).

We do not know, if this stone tool was originally intended to serve as a burin for graving, scraping and other purposes. In this case, the shouldered part of the artifact could have been used for hafting purposes.

Figure2
It may also be possible, that the burin blows were made in preparation of a the tip of a shouldered point, typical for the late Gravettian of the region ("Willendorf-Kostenki complex")

Burination on the other hand could have been simply used for the rejuvenation of a used tool (for example a broken shouldered Willendorf-Kostenki point).

In another scenario this artifact was simply discarded after an initial step of tool manufacture that was not completed.
